Protecting Special Places

Diverse and unique landscapes compose the shoreline of the southern United States. With its sea islands and fragile barrier islands, dunes and beaches, and unique maritime forests, the South has a landscape that attracts tourists and wildlife alike. This attractive landscape is accompanied by growing demands on our coastal resources and a need for strong protections of the treasures of the Southern coast.

The Southern Environmental Law Center is meeting these challenges by pursuing litigation that will defend specific places from imminent threat, while also creating and implementing legal strategies that yield region-wide, long-term protection for southern coastal resources. In addition to battles in the courtroom, SELC is helping raise public awareness about the value of and threats to the South's coastal resources. As part of this effort, we are working at the local, state, and national level to improve laws and regulations that guide the use of coastal resources.
